Kuru is a rare, incurable, and fatal neurodegenerative disorder that was formerly common among the Fore people of Papua New Guinea. The epidemic likely started when a villager developed sporadic Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease and died. When villagers ate the brain, they contracted the disease and then spread it to other villagers who ate their infected brains.

My Dad’s WWll stories got better every time he told them. Since no one was around the south Pacific with a camera all that often, I can’t prove that a lot of his memories weren’t enhanced, but I can say that the number of Japanese Zeros increased from four when I was in grade school to about a dozen by the time he died. If Biden’s uncle went down into the pacific, he probably was eaten, by sharks, but cannibals makes a better story to pass down to the grandkids.

There is an “All Creatures Great and Small” James Herriot (Wight) book scene where the vet, attending a farm animal in a remote rural area immediately after WWII while there was still considerable post-war resource privation in the UK, was invited to home cooked lunch with the farm couple.

He described trying to conceal his revulsion and disgust when they removed a container from their stove filled with slabs of hog fat roasted to an orange-brown crisp on the exterior, and went on to relate the taste and texture as he chewed his way through the meal. I avoided throwing up as I read — barely.

I can’t think why this cartoon caused me to remember this particular scene a half century after reading that book.
