“Lousma, the capsule communicator at Mission Control, Jim Lovell, the mission commander, responded: “Ah, Houston, we’ve had a problem.” The 1995 film Apollo 13 used the slight misquotation “Houston, we have a problem”, which had become the popularly expected phrase, in its dramatization of the mission." (Wikipedia so it must be true)
ALL of our Federal and State legislators have long lost their sense of fiscal responsibilty. To think, the USA was once the leading lending nation of the planet! Spend and Borrow: the philosophies of BOTH the Right and the Left.
Econ 101: the less you take in (aka taxes) the less there is to spend. Now if everyone in society payed their fair share instead of the republicon version where the poor and middle class get crushed and the mega rich and multi-billion dollar corporations pay less than the average secretary we might see a balanced budget. But the republiCONS don’t want that. They WANT the poor poor and the rich rich because the rich is where THEIR money comes from. Just ask clarence thomas.
So glad I live in Wyoming. no state income tax, our constitution bans deficit spending. We have constitutional carry, and a we respect out law enforcement.
When the Republicans have the White House they run up the debt. When Busch 1 began running up the debt, Chaney explained “Reagan has proven that Deficits Don’t Matter". They only become an issue for Republicans when a Democrat is in the White House and the bills need to be paid. Then they do this charade so that they can blame the Democrats and make points for the next election.
Reagan took the deficit from 70 billion to 175 billion.
Bush 41 took it to 300 billion.
Clinton got it to zero.
Bush 43 took it from 0 to 1.2 trillion.
Obama halved it to 600 billion.
Trump got it back to a trillion.
Biden reduced it $350 billion his first year in office. And the budget office expects to see it drop by another 1 trillion, 500 billion dollars – the largest drop ever. This is despite a $1.9 Trillion pandemic relief package. The Republicans screamed about this at the time, but it is credited with funding a faster recovery than anywhere else in the world, and actually decreasing the debt further.
President Biden took office after his predecessor signed into law a reckless and unpaid for tax cut that was skewed to the wealthy and large corporations, adding nearly $2 trillion to the deficit. Compared to when the President Biden took office, the deficit is over $1 trillion lower, thanks in large part to a strong economic recovery and a historic vaccination program that allowed the responsible wind-down of emergency measures. In addition, the President has enacted another roughly $1 trillion in savings over the next decade through the Fiscal Responsibility Act, and through the Inflation Reduction Act provisions that empower Medicare to negotiate lower prescription drug prices, cap insulin at $35 per month for seniors and people with disabilities, and make the wealthy and large corporations pay more of their fair share.
Guess that is why welfare states are mostly red, not from their debt but their political alignment. Wait till they get the trump support of stupid tax and they have to remortgage their homes!
Lost in discussion is the recognition that every dollar spent on the space program is spent on earth. Lost the discussion is recognition that the returns from the space research have been invaluable in medicine, in particular. The list of developments that have enriched life on earth are innumerable – – hi index progressive lenses in your glasses, for starters. Pacemakers. Google it. The benefits for climate research are critically important.
This is funny since the republican controlled House is completely in control of all spending. So trumpies are blaming themselves for this problem. But trumpies cannot figure out why everyone says their stupid.
To all the liberal liars above…put this in your pipe and smoke it…The top 1 percent earned 26.3 percent of total AGI and paid 45.8 percent of all federal income taxes. In all, the top 1 percent of taxpayers accounted for more income taxes paid than the bottom 90 percent combined.
Government fiscal management is incredibly more involved than the bromides seen all over this page. I spent 20 years active duty Marine Corps then 5 as a military contractor — the $$$$ waste in the Defense Department is extraordinary. Then there are the tremendous subsidies to businesses, agriculture & more that rarely are acknowledged by the bromides spewers. And consider how greater are the benefits, person for person, to the wealthy than average folks for federal spending on education, roads, healthcare & more. Many don’t realize how small the federal $ pie is once defense, social security & Medicare are taken off the table. Google “ How much has the U.S. government spent this year” & look at this year’s federal spending: 22% social security, 14% national defense, 14% healthcare, 13% interest, 12% Medicare — that’s 75%. Or do a test: of the federal spending you benefit from, which are you okay are cut? All this is known by the wealthy, the powerful & conservative politicians — who always PR exploit the simple thinking of so many Americans as they simultaneously protect their fiscal interests & federal spending on same. For 45 years I kept hoping regular folks would wise up. Instead, I’ve come to realize that the wealthy & powerful have nearly ask the political power & advantages and fully understand the fiscal — and they are glad most don’t & are exploitable via bromides management & more.

Of course, irresponsibly giving tax breaks to billionaires never enters into the equation.
