I remember reading once about a family that bought a new home and then discovered that the former owners had installed a drain in the garage that was against city ordinances because it went straight to the sewers instead of going through a proper drain system. They reported it to the city and asked how to correct the problem and the city responded by fineing them for having an illegal drain in their garage.
