using the slash mark that we can’t use here at go comics to represent “and” is a recent inexplicable trend here in japan. i keep explaining to customers that, if anything, it means “and/or,” but that it’s just not a good idea. and then, just the other day, i received a translation job in which the slash mark appeared once again – the writer’s job title was shown as “president slash mark CEO”… ☺
news pieces about folks who, oops, pick and eat colchicums, autumn crocuses, mistaking them for siberian onions (called gyoja “garlic” in japanese), are a regular feature hereabouts during spring when harvesting edible weeds is a popular pastime among mostly old folks. we’re always perplexed how people can be confused about plants that don’t smell at all oniony and joke that it was a shame they were too old to improve the gene pool with their demise…
